An initiative of The Australian Institute of Architects, National Architecture Week invited Unitised Building to install a one bedroom apartment, built using the UB® System, into the Amphitheatre at Melbourne’s Federation Square to showcase the future of sustainable design and construction. The installation was the headline feature of National Architecture Week which ran from Sunday 24th – Saturday 30th October 2010.
Shelley Roberts, Architect & Coordinator of National Architecture Week Melbourne 2010, summarised the installation by saying, “The Unitised™ archiPad showcases the ability to design and build high density housing that is both affordable and sustainable, while maintaining design integrity. The wide range of applications is something our industry is very excited about.”
Following its appearance at Federation Square, the apartment will now form part of VicUrban’s ‘The Nicholson’ project in Coburg, an $80 million development designed by Architects Design Inc. comprising of 200 dwellings – a number of which will be funded by the Federal Government’s Nation Building initiative and subsidised under the National Rental Affordable Housing Scheme.
Hickory Developments Pty Ltd, the prime contractor for this project, and Unitised Building, the subcontractor, are building the apartments using the UB® System. The Nicholson will provide housing for about 350 people. The construction is underway and is due for completion by May 2011.
